Introduction
Maintaining unloading arms at liquefied natural gas (LNG) sites is critical for ensuring safe and efficient operations. These articulated mechanical arms, essential for transporting liquefied natural gas from tankers to terminals, must withstand extreme temperatures as low as -162°C. For this project, Sutro Group deployed its rope access engineering specialists, supported by NDT and drone inspection services, to maintain the unloading arms at various LNG sites in the UK. The project was completed ahead of schedule, within budget, and with zero lost time incidents.
Benefits and Savings
Rope access teams were rapidly deployed, and demobilisation was swift, allowing operations to resume without delay.
Rope access reduced equipment costs and minimised downtime for the unloading arms, resulting in significant cost savings.
Utilising rope access techniques eliminated the need for scaffolding and cranes, making it a safer method for maintaining unloading arms.
Sutro’s self-contained teams minimised administrative hurdles, such as Permit to Work issues, and maintained clear communication with site planning and maintenance departments.
Project Overview
Sutro Group’s rope access team of four specialists, led by an experienced project manager, carried out the unloading arm maintenance. The project’s scope included:
- Disconnection and reconnection of product lines, hydraulic lines, and electrical systems.
- Removal and servicing of key components such as counterbalance weights, potentiometers, and grease lines.
- Use of chain blocks, slings, and turfor cables to safely stow and service the unloading arms.
- Collaboration with the barge and crane teams to lift, service, and reassemble the arms.
- Final testing and calibration of the arm systems to ensure they were operational and safe.
Solution
Sutro Group’s rope access solution offers a safer, faster, and more cost-effective alternative to traditional scaffolding methods. By using this approach, Sutro was able to successfully maintain the unloading arms with minimal downtime, ensuring the continued operation of these critical components of the LNG sites.
With our rope access expertise, NDT inspection capabilities, and drone technology, Sutro Group consistently delivers high-quality maintenance services for challenging industrial environments.
