We are pleased to announce that Sutro has opened an Innovation and Development Centre in Newport.
Due to the continued expansion of the business, we have moved into a modern industrial unit on Langland Park West in Newport’s commercial district.
The new larger premises gives us more space to carry out advanced applications training before deploying our range of inspection services to our expanding client base.
Examples of the type of training that we will be carrying out include NDT inspection techniques – phased array ultrasonic testing (PAUT) for our ultrasonic technicians – and training on the Elios 2 confined space drone for our drone inspection engineers.
PAUT has many advantages over conventional ultrasonic testing including faster inspection speeds, simplified inspection, improved flaw detection, more reliable results and increased safety. The fact that PAUT results in quicker, more accurate and efficient inspections mean that it is more cost-effective for our clients.
The Elios 2 confined space drone training will equip our team with hands-on experience enabling them to plan and execute inspections in complex indoor environments. Without the need for rope access or scaffolding, confined space drones mean we can complete visual inspections in the most confined spaces keeping our inspection engineers safe from dangerous environments.
Confined space drones give us the ability to inspect virtually any space no matter the size, shape or structural material. They have the added advantage over traditional drones in that they are collision-proof, they use obstacles within the surveying environment to navigate and avoid colliding with them. They also have thermal cameras and lighting to make it possible to visually inspect the most challenging places including mineshafts, tunnels, ship hulls and ballast tanks as well as industrial boilers, silos, tanks and pressure vessels.
All of which requires incredible skill to operate and manoeuvre the drone. It’s these skills that we are able to hone at the new premises enabling us to offer our clients improved safety, reduced asset downtime and planning time, faster and more accurate inspections.
Our new premises are located at:
Unit D3, Langland Park West
Langland Way
Newport

The new location is just off the A48. If you are heading from Cardiff leave the M4 at junction 28 and head towards the City Bridge. We are just on the other side of the bridge. If you are heading from the other direction leave the M4 at junction 24 and turn off the A48 just before reaching the City Bridge.
